Licensure Program Eligibility by State

Effective July 1, 2020, the U.S. Department of Education enacted Regulation 34 CFR 668.43 (a) (5) (v) which requires all colleges and universities disclose information regarding program licensure and U.S. state and territory eligibility.

Recently, they have made modifications to this policy, which not only require universities to disclose program licensure information, but additionally to determine a student's state of residency at the time of initial enrollment. Of particular importance would be if that residency state accepts the licensure requirments from the State of Tennessee. Should a student's home state not accept the State of Tennessee LIcensure requirements, the student would be ineligble to pursue the program and receive Federal Financial Aid. However, a student would have the below options for pursuing the program:

  • Students could opt to self pay for the program

  • An Attestation may be filed indicating employment will be sought outside of the home state.

For additional infomration regarding the attestation and process, please contact Jasmine O'Brien at obrienjr@bonaprinting.com or (931) 221-6243.

365bet strives to maintain updated links and accurate licensure infomration. However, states may change policies, procedures, and requirements inbetween review cycles. Therefore, it is very important and highly encourages for licensure students to review the appropriate accrediting board's links for their home state.

Below is a comprehensive listing of licensure programs offered by Austin Peay State University as well as appropriate state licensure board information and supporting links:

Completion of the 120 semester-hour Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting (B.B.A.) at Austin Peay State University (365bet) qualifies students to sit for the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) examination in Tennessee.  It includes all required accounting and business courses and hours required for a Tennessee license however, awarding of a Tennessee CPA license requires 150 semester hours of credit, or 30 additional credit hours.

365bet’s Master of Science Management (MSM) program can fulfill the additional 30 semester hour requirement.  Or students can double-major in other undergraduate business degree programs in the 365bet College of Business to provide the additional 30 credit hours.

All states require 150 credit hours and a Bachelor’s degree for licensure in accounting.  Licensure requirements with respect to specific courses vary from state to state and are subject to change.

Consult with the State Board of Accountancy in each state for the most up-to-date information.  (Links to all state boards can be found at http://nasba.org/stateboards/ .

The Counseling Psychology doctoral program (PsyD) at Austin Peay State University launched in Fall 2020 and is not accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association (APA) (see the listing provided by the Office of Program Consultation and Accreditation, American Psychological Association, 750 First Street NE, Washington, DC 20002; http://www.apa.org/ed/accreditation, 202-336- 5979). The PsyD in Counseling Psychology program at 365bet is designed to produce graduates who are able to be successfully licensed in most states. However, as a new program, we have not yet had any program graduates and therefore have had no graduates to apply for licensure in any state.

It is important to learn the requirements to becoming licensed as a psychologist in your location, with a graduate degree is one but not the only requirement. In addition to education requirements for the doctoral degree, many jurisdictions require post-doctoral professional experience and some states have additional training, education, and/or requirements that are not required for a degree.

Generally, the way licensure works in counseling psychology is:

  • Complete an approved education program. This often includes completion of supervised pre-doctoral practicum hours as well as an APA- accredited full-time one-year pre-doctoral internship towards the end of your doctoral program. We will participate in Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers (APPIC), which coordinates a nationwide internship match for students each APA-accredited programs are recognized across many states although some states impose additional education and training requirements.
  • Complete a 1-year post-doctoral fellowship with supervised clinical experience under the appropriate license or registration for the state you are located However, some states do not require post-doctoral training;
  • Take the national (EPPP—Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology) and state examinations required;
  • Complete any additional non-educational and/or educational requirements for the state you are seeking licensure in (such as background checks, credential verifications, any additional specific training requirements).

State Boards of Psychology determine requirements for licensure and typically include post-doctoral training as well as examinations beyond the educational requirements so that a doctoral degree is not sufficient to meet licensure requirements in most states. Students should confirm state licensing requirements directly with the state they are interested in licensure. For more information on licensing requirements, including contact information for every state and territory licensing board, please see the Association of State Boards of Professional Psychology (ASBPP) webpage. ASPPB (Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards) provides a compendium called PsyBook which summarizes requirements for most states and may be a helpful resource for students determining vocational location and licensing requirements.

Note that in some jurisdictions, in addition to being licensed as psychologist, an individual can obtain prescribing privileges for some medications. Our program does not fulfill requirements for licensure as prescribing psychologists in those states and jurisdictions that allow for it. Typically, additional post-doctoral coursework in pharmacology is needed in addition to the doctoral degree. Please see the ASBPP website for information about other U.S. territories and Canadian provinces.

Below is a listing of all states and the District of Columbia and our current understanding of educational requirements based largely on the annual review by ASPPB to give you a general idea of how well our program fits with the educational requirements of each location. Please remember that there are state requirements for licensure in addition to the educational requirements described below. We make every effort to ensure the information below is current; however, state requirements may change. If you are planning to pursue professional licensure or certification, it is strongly recommended that you contact the appropriate licensing entity in that location to seek information and guidance regarding licensure or certification requirements before beginning an academic program. You should directly check the web sites of the State Licensing Board you are interested in, all of which are listed and linked below, for the most accurate and up to date information on educational and other requirements for licensure. Finally, for information on professional licensure preparation in counseling psychology at Austin Peay State University, please contact

The data that follows considers whether or not the 365bet Bachelor of Social Work and the 365bet Master of Social Work degrees meet US state licensing guidelines. Licensed Bachelor of Social Worker and Licensed Master’s Social Worker are designated LBSW and LMSW, respectively.
